East Middle School eighth graders Emma Gordon and Jorden Sonnemann are this week’s Leskovar Honda Athletes of the Week.
Both are huge assets for East’s unified basketball team, helping the Bullpups earn the distinction of being ranked one of the top 40 inclusive schools by ESPN.
Gordon takes home the girls’ award. Coach Kelci Thatcher says she is a basketball player who embodies skill, resilience and teamwork on the court.
“Breaking barriers and challenging stereotypes, she showcases not only exceptional athleticism but also a commitment to inclusivity and collaboration,” Thatcher said. “Her presence symbolizes the strength that arises when diverse talents come together with a common goal. Beyond the game, Emma makes the world a better place with her smile and positive attitude. She is kind and caring to everyone.”
Sonnemann receives the boys’ honor. Thatcher said he elevates his teammates to new heights with the precision in his moves, strategic gameplay and keen understanding of his teammates’ strengths.
“Sonnemann’s leadership both on and off the court fosters a sense of unity among players of diverse backgrounds, fostering a supportive environment,” Thatcher said. “Jorden Sonnemann is a pivotal player, exemplifying the transformative impact that individual excellence coupled with a collaborative spirit can have on a unified basketball team.”
Leskovar Honda, home of the 20-year, 200,000-mile warranty, teamed up with the ButteCast to honor the finest athletes from the Mining City in an effort to encourage more children to get up, get out and try all kinds of sports and activities.
