Butte High senior Derek Dunmire and Butte Central senior Ella Moodry are this week’s Leskovar Honda Athletes of the Week.

The honors come after both Mining City athletes got off to a strong start to the spring sports season.

Dunmire takes home the boys’ honor after spinning a gem on the mound March 28 in Hamilton. He pitched five innings, giving up one run. He struck out seven and worked around four walks as the Bulldogs knocked off the Broncs in a 3-1 thriller.

Dunmire did not pick up the win that day, but he is 1-0 on the season with a 1.11 ERA. An outstanding glove at third base, Dunmire also has a double, two RBIs and four runs scored through Butte’s first four games.

The 3-1 Bulldogs will play their home opener Saturday against Stevensville at 11 a.m. at 3 Legends Stadium.

Moodry receives the girls’ award after a great performance at the March 23 Blue Devil Invitational in Corvallis.

The two-time Class A State javelin champion won the javelin in the opener with a mark of 125 feet, 9 inches. That beat the State qualifying mark by more than 10 feet. Moodry won the State title as a freshman and junior. She placed second in the event as a sophomore. She launched the Javelin 133-8 at State last May.

Moodry, who will compete in track at the University of Montana, placed sixth in the 100 meters and took third in the 200 with a personal-best time of 28.06 seconds.

For the second year, Leskovar Honda, home of the 20-year, 200,000-mile warranty, is teaming up with the ButteCast to honor the finest student-athletes from the Mining City in an effort to encourage more children to get up, get out and try all kinds of sports and activities.
