Butte High Bulldogs Brityn Stewart and Quinn Cox are this week’s Leskovar Honda Athletes of the Week.
Stewart, a junior, takes home the girls’ honor after a big-time performance Friday, May 10 at the Last Chance Invitational in Belgrade. Stewart took advantage of that last chance by winning the javelin with a mark of 117 feet, 2 inches.
Stewart’s personal-best mark beat second-place Kate Breeding of Gallatin by nearly four feet. It also surpassed the Class AA qualifying standard, meaning the throw books Stewart a trip to the Class AA State meet May 24-25 in Great Falls.
The award means Stewart pulled off the trifecta this school year. She took home the Leskovar Honda Athlete of the Week honor in volleyball, basketball and now track.
Cox receives the boys’ honor for driving in three runs — one the painful way — to help lead Butte High to a 6-3 win over Livingston Saturday in Livingston. The win sends the Bulldogs to the State tournament in Missoula.
On the game, the catcher hit a pair of sacrifice flies and was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Cox was hit by three pitches in the game, and he shares the team lead in that category with Cayde Stajcar with nine.
Cox, who missed his entire junior season after tearing an ACL in football, is batting .413 on the season. He carries an on-base percentage of .500, and he has belted six doubles and a home run.
He is most proud of those nine beanballs, however.
For the second year, Leskovar Honda, home of the 20-year, 200,000-mile warranty, is teaming up with the ButteCast to honor the finest student-athletes from the Mining City in an effort to encourage more children to get up, get out and try all kinds of sports and activities.
