Butte High seniors Mylee Demarais and Oliver Steele are this week’s Leskovar Honda Athletes of the Week.
Demarais earned the girls’ honor after an outstanding couple of weeks for the Bulldogs. In back-to-back matches, she tallied 11 kills, posting a hitting percentage of 0.611 and .0455, to help the Bulldogs beat Missoula Hellgate and Sentinel.
After Butte High fell this past Friday at Kalispell Glacier, Demarais tallied seven kills, two aces and four blocks to help Butte High take down Kalispell Flathead in four sets.
The middle hitter registered 61 kills on the season, which is second on the team. She also leads the Bulldogs with 19 aces and ranks second with 14 total blocks.
The Bulldogs, who are 3-1 in Western AA play, will play host to Helena High on Tuesday.
Steele takes home the boys’ honor after a game-altering interception in Butte High’s 21-14 win over Missoula Big Sky Friday at Naranche Stadium.
With Butte High trailing 7-0 and the Eagles driving, Steele picked off a pass and returned it 84 yards toward the west end zone. He was tripped up at the 1-yard line, but the momentum was shifted. Senior quarterback Colton Shea punched in a 1-yard run on the next play to tie the game.
In Butte High’s first win of the season, the linebacker racked up nine total tackles. He got in on a tackle for a loss. Steele has been a leader of the defense all season. Through four games, he has 32 total tackles.
Butte High will play Kalispell Flathead Friday at Naranche.
For the second year, Leskovar Honda, home of the 20-year, 200,000-mile warranty, is teaming up with the ButteCast to honor the finest student-athletes from the Mining City in an effort to encourage more children to get up, get out and try all kinds of sports and activities.
