Butte High wrestling siblings Will and Mattie Stepan are this week’s Leskovar Honda Athletes of the Week.
The honors come after the Stepans battled to strong showings at the annual Tom LeProwse tournament in Bozeman. The tournament, of course, is named after the late Butte Sports Hall of Famer. Will Stepan is a senior who has signed to play football at Montana Tech. Mattie Stepan is a junior.
Will takes home the boys’ honor after placing third at 150 pounds. He went 7-1 in the two-day tournament, battling back from an early loss with six straight wins on the consolation side.
He beat Connor Lamping of Helena 9-6 in the third-place match. Butte High’s boys placed eighth in the crowded field of 37 teams.
Mattie receives the girls’ honor after placing sixth at 145 points to help lead the Bulldog girls, who placed 18th out of 34. Over the tournament, Stepan went 4-3 while competing in a difficult weight class. She won three matches by way of the pin.
The Bulldog teams will celebrate Senior Night Friday when they take on Helena High and Helena Capital at the old Butte High gym.
For the third year, Leskovar Honda, home of the 20-year, 200,000-mile warranty, is teaming up with the ButteCast to honor the finest student-athletes from the Mining City in an effort to encourage more children to get up, get out and try all kinds of sports and activities.
