Butte American Legion baseball player Noah Powers and Copper City Softball player Sophia Martin are this week’s Leskovar Honda Athletes of the Week.
Powers takes home the boys’ honor after pitching a gem for the Butte Muckers in the championship game of the Butte American Legion Baseball tournament on Miners Field at 3 Legends Stadium.
Powers, a towering righty who plays third base when he’s not pitching, threw a complete game to outduel Frenchtown star lefty Dawson Rodoni for a 3-2 victory in Sunday’s championship game. Powers scattered six hits over seven innings, struck out four and did not issue a walk. He needed just 66 pitches, 52 of which went for strikes.
In 16.1 innings on the mound for the Muckers this season, Powers has a 2.14 ERA. He has stuck out 10 and walked only one. He is also a reliable glove on the hot corner, and his bat has been heating up as of late.
Powers, who just finished his freshman year at Butte High School, was also a standout on the Bulldog basketball team this past season.
Martin takes home the girls’ award after putting up outstanding performances during her team’s games last week, contributing both offensively and defensively in impressive fashion. She went 3 for 5 at the plate, showing off her consistent bat and ability to get on base when her team needed it most.
On the field, Sophia demonstrated excellent defensive skills. She caught a challenging fly ball in left field, making a crucial out for her team. But the highlight of her defensive game came when she executed a double play, showcasing her quick thinking and awareness on the field. Her leadership and composure in high-pressure situations truly stood out.
In addition to her remarkable performance in Little League, Sophia is a recent sixth grade graduate of Whittier Elementary, and she plays for the Highland Hitters volleyball team. Her commitment to multiple sports shows her strong work ethic, discipline and determination to succeed in everything she does.
Sophia is a dedicated athlete, a team player and a shining example of sportsmanship.
For the third year, Leskovar Honda, home of the 20-year, 200,000-mile warranty, is teaming up with the ButteCast to honor the finest student-athletes from the Mining City to encourage more children to get up, get out and try all kinds of sports and activities.
