The varsity baseball and softball teams for Butte High picked up their first wins of the season over the past week.
Butte High’s baseball team went to Kalispell and split with Flathead and Glacier Friday and Saturday, while the Bulldog softball team did the same at Stodden Park Monday and Tuesday.
While Butte Central’s softball team had the week off, BC’s tennis team jumped into action this week. Butte High’s tennis teams will also be making another home appearance.
Butte High’s track & field teams are finally set to make their long-awaited season debut this Friday. That meet will include Bulldog runner Camden Houchin, who signed Wednesday to take his talents to Montana State.
Those are the stories will look at as we take a lap around the Mining City sports scene.
Houchin heading to Bozeman
Butte High senior runner Camden Houchin will be a Montana State Bobcat.
Houchin signed to run cross country and track for the Bobcats during a ceremony Wednesday afternoon at Butte High. The signing comes as Houchin enters the final two months of his remarkable career as a Butte High distance runner.
Houchin will go down as one of the all-time great runners in Bulldog history. He earned All-State honors by running to fourth place at the Class AA State meet last fall in Missoula. He completed the 3-mile course in 15 minutes, 59.9 seconds.
He competed at the State meet all four years at Butte High. He placed 21st at State as a junior, 41st as a sophomore and 67th as a freshman.
Last season, Houchin qualified for the Class AA State track meet in the 800-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter races. He placed seventh in the 3,200.
He also ran a leg for Butte High’s 1,600-meter relay team at State.
Houchin will begin his senior track season Friday on the Charlie Merrifield Track.
The meet will be the first for the Bulldogs, who saw their meet with Missoula Sentinel, Missoula Hellgate and Butte Central snowed out last Tuesday.
Billings Senior and Billings Skyview will be in town for the triangular, which is set to begin at 2 p.m. at Bulldog Memorial Stadium inside the Gene Fogarty Complex.
This is the beginning of a busy stretch for the Bulldogs. Butte High is scheduled to compete again Tuesday at Helena Capital before hosting Glacier for a meet on Friday, April 17.
Butte Central will see its second meet of the season Saturday when the Maroons head to East Helena. Action begins at 9 a.m.
