PONY — Ennis runner Mason Nelson and Jefferson High’s Payton Stearns were the fastest runners Thursday at the Pony cross country meet at Pony Park. (Results)

Butte Central competed in the meet, which came just two days after the Maroons ran in the Butte Central Invitational.

Nelson, a junior, won the boys’ 5-kilometer race in 18 minutes, 13 seconds. Whitehall freshman Ember Hunt took second in 18:34, and Townsend senior Dallas Fligge finished fourth at 1940.

Eighth grader Ryan Byrne and senior Joe Bradshaw ran for BC. Both finished in under 23 minutes. Byrne crossed in 22:13, while Bradshaw finished in 22:54.

Ennis won the team title with 35 points. Jefferson High of Boulder was second at 39, and Townsend took third at 59.

Sterns, a senior, won the girls’ race in 22:11. She beat sophomore teammate Piper Dawson by 7 seconds. Maeve McGrath of Livingston took third at 22:21.

Butte Central sophomore Ashley White finished in 26:30.

Next up for the Maroon runners is the Sept. 19 Mountain West Invitational in Missoula.
