SHELBY — Butte Central junior Beau McGree finds himself in a four-way tie for fourth place after the first round of the Class A State golf tournament at the Marias Valley Golf & Country Club.
McGree followed a 40 on the front nine with a 32 on the back to match par at 72. He trails the great Max Milton of Polson by six shots.
Milton shot a 33 one each nine to take the boys’ individual lead with a 66. He sits three shots better than second-place Colin Jensen of Billings Central. Royce Taylor of Laurel is second at 70.
McGree is tied with Stuart Gentry of Livingston, Matthew Hermanson of Billings Central and Mason O’Niell of Whitefish.
Billings Central leads the boys’ team race at 293. Polson is second at 301, followed by Whitefish at 312.
Ryhlee Scott of Whitefish shot a 78 to take the first-round lead on the girls’ leaderboard. Cameron Burnett of Hamilton and Autumn Goodan of Lewistown are one shot back at 79. Karlee Borwn of Whitefish is fourth at 82, and Dillon’s Skylar LaPierre is holding down fifth at 83.
Butte Central freshman Mya McGree carded a 96. That puts her four shots out of 15th place and All-State recognition heading into Saturday’s final round.
