Players form the Mining City FC U12 soccer team are this week’s Leskovar Honda Athletes of the Week.
The honors come after the co-ed team won the Spooky Sixes tournament over the weekend in Idaho Falls. The tournament was a Halloween-themed tournament hosted by Idaho Falls FC.
After tying their first game, the Butte players went undefeated the rest of the tournament to win their bracket. They found redemption in the championship game by beathing the team they tied to open the tournament.
Goalkeepers Finn Durkin and Niam Richman and the rest of the defense kept the Butte squad in games by only giving up three goals all tournament. The team outscored its opponents 12-3.
Goal scorers Ryker Beardsley and Liam Maesar led the offense.
“The entire team played great, though,” Butte coach Mike Maesar said. “It’s hard to single out anyone. This was a fun chance to play some new teams that we normally wouldn’t see in our season.”
The team is made up of girls Aluna Sparks, Kourtney Johnson, Brynlee Turner and Iris Lockyer, and boys Maesar, Beardsley, Durkin, Richman, Owen Conlan and Daniel Mjelde. Mike Maesar and Sheena Johnson are the coaches.
Coach Maeser also pointed out that the Mining City FC U13 team played in the tournament. They lost all three games, but all three were close.
Since the beginning of 2023, Leskovar Honda, home of the non-commission sales staff that always has your back, has teamed up with the ButteCast to honor the finest student-athletes from the Mining City to encourage more children to get up, get out and try all kinds of sports and activities.
