BILLINGS — As the old saying goes, all you can do is do your best.

That was certainly the case for the distance runners from Butte High and Butte Central who competed at the MHSA State Cross Country Meet on a Chamber of Commerce Day at Amend Park. (Results)

The Bulldogs and Maroons laid it all on the line Saturday, and that was evident in the amount of personal-best or season-best times the Butte runners posted.

Unfortunately for the Bulldogs and Maroons, the competition was incredibly fast, too.

The top four girls in the Class AA meet broke the all-class record, only to see Billings Central star Addison Kegel break it again an hour and a half later.

Phoebe Maixner of Bozeman won the girls’ Class AA meet with a time of 16 minutes, 58 seconds over the 5-killometer course. Ada Thiel of Glacier took second at 17:10, and Reed Stromberg of Missoula Hellgate placed third at 17:20. Lauren Bissen of Glacier was fourth at 17:26.

Sophomore Sophia Houchin led the Bulldogs. She placed 37th in the 108-runner race with a personal-best time of 19:12. That came after she missed the first part of the season with a hip injury.

Junior Penelope Luebke finished with a season-best time of 20:46, and junior Wakely Burelson crossed with a personal record of 21:09.

Senior Valerie Trabert (25:25), junior Cambri O’Neill (26:18), senior Sofia Trabella (27:36) and junior Lynn Wiltsie (30:56) also competed for Butte High. Trabert and Tarabella posted personal records, while O’Neill ran a season-best time.

Helena High won the team title at 83. Bozeman was second at 94, and Glacier took third at 113. The Bulldogs finished 16th at 390.

Kegel won the girls’ Class A race in 16:44. Polson’s Morgan and Quinn Delaney followed at 17:11 and 17:25.

Sophomore Ashley White finished with a personal-best time of 23:19 for the Maroons. Freshman Lionnora Howard (32:25) also ran for BC.

Bozeman’s Taylor Neil won the AA boys’ title with a time of 14:39.4 seconds. That broke the all-class record that was set by brother Nathan.

Miles Miller of Hellgate took second at 15:08, and Branlin Foote of Bozeman was third at 15:22.

Senior Bridger Luebke, who was hobbled with injuries much of the season, led the Bulldogs with a personal-best time of 17:12. Teammate Isaac Zell, a junior, was one second behind Luebke. Sophomore Kai Schuler was right behind them at 17:17.

Zell and Schuler ran personal-best times.

Senior Colton Yoakum finished with a season-best time of 17:54, which was two seconds better than sophomore Jason Real’s personal-best time of 17:56.

Also, junior Lyric Haston ran a personal-best time of 19:27 for the Dogs, and classmate Jere Moen posted a personal-best time of 19:30.

Bozeman won the team Title at 59. Helena was next at 67, and CMR took third at 102. Butte High finished 16th at 399.

Ben Bird of Hardon won the A boys’ race in 15:19. David Curry of Lewistown took second at 15:33, which was one second better than Porter Shehan of Whitefish.

Eighth grader Ryan Byrne led Butte Central. He ran a personal-best time of 19:37. All four BC boys finished with personal records.

Freshman Roman Terry finished in 19:57, senior Joe Bradshaw ran in 20:20, and junior Connor Kachmarik ran in 20:36.

The Maroons did not have enough runners to qualify for a team score.
