East Middle School eighth graders Riley Mingus and Kaylee Mehring are the Leskovar Honda Athletes of the Week.

Both take home the honors after their second season participating in Unified Sports at the school.

Mehring receives the girls’ honor after showing that she was a strong force for Coach Shahan’s Wildcats.

“Kaylee is a basketball player that is always under control and plus at different speeds,” coach Kelci Thatcher said. “She runs the floor as fast as possible on fast breaks and defensive transitions and always with a smile. Kaylee is the ideal coachable player. She is supportive, has high energy, and always made her level of enthusiasm contagious. She is unselfish; always passing the ball to her open teammate. She always elevates her teammates to become great players too.”

Mingus is the boys’ honoree after playing forward for Coach Dennehy’s Eagles.

“Riley’s determination is a quality that cannot be taught,” Thatcher said. “He is a player that shows up day in and day out and does all the little things, never wanting recognition. Riley is mentally tough, never letting his emotions get the best of him. His calm, collective demeanor is contagious. Riley is a great defensive stopper; stopping his player as well as helping out his teammates. He contests all shots, never falling for ball fakes or shot fakes. Riley is a true asset to the Eagles.”

Leskovar Honda, home of the 20-year, 200,000-mile warranty, teamed up with the ButteCast to honor the finest student-athletes from the Mining City in an effort to encourage more children to get up, get out and try all kinds of sports and activities.
