You have heard of boys who grew up in the shadow of their older brother — or in Rob Johnson’s case, his older sister.
Well, Butte High’s new head baseball coach, Coyt Stajcar, has always been overshadowed by his younger brother, Cayde. Of course, there is good reason for that. We could all see a superstar athlete in Cayde before he even entered kindergarten, and delivered on that promise by winning the first Montana Gatorade Player of the Year award in baseball.
Coyt, though, has been very instrumental to the Mining City baseball landscape in his own right. He was a darn good player on some Butte Miners teams that set the stage and culture for the 2022 state and regional championship team.
Coyt, a 2020 Butte Central graduate, was not a member of that team, but he was for the few years leading up to that magical summer. His final year playing was in 2021 — the year before Cayde first played American Legion baseball.
For the past three seasons, Coyt has served as an assistant coach for the Butte High baseball program. He was also a coach on the Butte Muckers baseball team.
Recently, he was selected to replace Jim LeProwse and become the second head coach in the history of the Bulldog baseball program, and Coyt is eager to get to work.

As a parent of a former player in the Butte High and Legion programs, I can tell you that Coyt is a coach who is revered by his players. Those players respect his baseball knowledge, and they love the guy who can teach them a lesson while letting them have fun playing the game.
At 24 years old, he is also one of the youngest varsity head coaches you will ever see.
Yesterday, I met with Coyt at the Knights of Columbus Hall for a fun conversation.
Listen in as Coyt talks about being the older brother of a superstar. Listen as he talks about his playing days, getting into coaching and talking over the Bulldog program.
Listen as he talks the adjustment that he must make to no longer be the “good cop” of the coaching staff. Listen in to hear that the Bulldogs just made a really good choice.
