Boys light up Bill Roberts

HELENA — Butte High senior Kate DeShaw is holding down third place on the girls’ leaderboard after Wednesday’s first round of the Helena Invitational golf tournament.

That came on a day when the boys’ field put up some eye-popping scores that will make you look twice. The girls’ scores were pretty good, too.

DeShaw shot an 82 on the par-72 Bill Roberts Golf Course. Maci Reiff of Missoula Sentinel holds down the lead at 75, while Maggie Milton of Glacier shot a 79 and sits in second place.

Sentinel and Missoula Big Sky share the team lead for girls at 349. Polson is third at 360, and Butte High is fourth at 381.

Lilly Carden added a 95 for the Bulldogs, and Sage Leber shot a 99. Also, Julia DeShaw carded a 106 and Lilly Sandoval finished at 110.

On the boys’ side, the Bulldogs posted some great scores, but they are still a long way out of the lead — on the individual and team leaderboards. Eight boys finished the first round of the two-day tournament under par.

Butte High junior Jack Muhlstein shot a 1-over-par 73 to lead the Bulldogs, and that is only good for a tie for 12th place.

Max Milton of Polson lit up the course with a 9-under 63 to take the first-round lead. He is two shots better than Sentinel’s Cole Jenkins. Matt Gilvert of Capital shot a 68 for third place, and Torren Murray of Glacier and Derek Schaefer of Sentinel are tied for fourth at 69.

Butte junior Teague Yelenich and freshman Lane Lisac each shot a 74, which puts in a four-way tie for 15th place. Sophomore Beckham Kensie shot a 77, and sophomore Miles Choquette hit an 84.

Sentinel leads the boys’ team race at 278. Capital sits in second at 281, followed by Polson at 293 and Glacier at 297. Butte High holds down fifth place at 298.
