Polson’s Milton finishes at 17 under

HELENA — Day 2 of the Helena Invitational was once again the Max Milton Show.

The Polson golfer followed a 63 on the par-72 Bill Roberts Golf Course with a 64 Thursday for a 17-under 127 total to run away with boys’ medalist honors. His performances left coaches around the state scratching their heads in disbelief.

Once again, though, the day featured some impressive scores from some Butte High Bulldogs. That included a pair of top-10 performances.

Butte High senior Kate DeShaw held onto fourth place on the girls’ leaderboard, while Bulldog junior Jack Muhlstein moved up to take seventh in the boys’ race.

Milton beat second-place Jayce Belzer of Helena Capital by 10 shots, and Belzer followed a 2-under 70 with a 5-under 67 for a 137 total. Torren Murray of Glacier slipped one shot for a 70 and 139, which was good for a third-place tie with John Gilbert of Helena Capital. Gilbert fired a final-round 68.

Muhlstein improved three shots for 2-under par 70. He finished with a 1-underpar 143.

Capital won the team title at 572, beating second-place Missoula Sentinel by 11 shots. Polson took third at 591, and Butte High shot 598 to take fourth. The Dogs followed a 298 with a 300. That is a score that traditionally would win a lot of tournaments.

Butte High junior Teagan Yelenich and Bulldog freshman Lane Lisac tied for 14th place at 150. Both followed a 74 with a final-round 76.

Sophomore Beckam Kinsey followed a 77 with an 81 for a 158, and sophomore Miles Choquette improved six shots for a 78 and a 162 total.

On the girls’ side, Maci Reiff of Sentinel claimed medalist honors at 161. She followed Wednesday’s 76 with an 85. Maggie Milton of Glacier and Charlotte Dale of Missoula Big Sky tied for second at 168.

DeShaw, who shot an 82 Wednesday, finished with a 92 for a 175 total.

Big Sky won the team title at 712. Polson took second at 741, finishing one shot better than Sentinel. Capital took third at 774, and Butte High finished fifth at 796.

Junior Sage Leber improved 10 shots for an 89 to place 13th for Butte High at 188. Sophomore Lilly Sandoval finished at 223, and sophomore Julia DeShaw shot a 226 two-day total.

Freshman Lilly Carden came in at 229.
